Highway 2000 is the centerpiece of the Government of Jamaica’s multi-year Millennium Projects Programme, aimed at upgrading national infrastructure while stimulating economic growth and job creation. The highway serves as a critical transportation corridor, connecting Kingston with Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, and passing through several key parishes including St. Catherine, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, and St. Ann.
LIMCO Engineering & Contracting Services was awarded a contract by the project developer, Bouygues Travaux Publics (Jamaica), to provide engineering support services for the design and implementation of street lighting systems along key sections of the highway. This included lighting for toll plazas and interchanges, where safety, visibility, and operational reliability are essential for both motorists and toll operations.
The scope of work covered the design of electrical power distribution systems, preparation of detailed working (shop) drawings, and the development of accurate “as-built” drawings to reflect completed installations. LIMCO’s designs ensured compliance with applicable standards while supporting long-term maintenance and operational efficiency.
Street lighting design for toll plazas, interchanges, and highway extensions
Electrical power distribution system design to support roadway lighting
Preparation of shop drawings and detailed construction documentation
Development of accurate as-built drawings for completed works
Compliance with national infrastructure standards and safety requirements
Coordination with the developer and construction teams
Following the successful completion of this assignment, LIMCO was further engaged to design the street lighting system for the Marcus Garvey Drive extension, spanning from the Highway 2000 interchange to the Greenwich intersection. This continued involvement demonstrated LIMCO’s technical expertise and trusted role in delivering critical transportation infrastructure projects across Jamaica.
The Highway 2000 lighting projects were successfully completed, delivering safe, efficient, and reliable street lighting systems that enhance visibility and roadway safety. LIMCO’s engineering solutions supported smooth traffic flow, improved nighttime driving conditions, and long-term operational efficiency. The successful execution and subsequent engagement on the Marcus Garvey Drive extension reinforced LIMCO’s contribution to Jamaica’s national transportation infrastructure and economic development goals.
